Carbon footprint verification and greenhouse gas emissions

Due to increasing climate responsibility and regulations, verification of greenhouse gas emissions is becoming increasingly important. Carbon footprint verification helps organizations reliably report their emissions and comply with regulations such as CSRD, SEC, and ESG reporting obligations.

As an independent verifier, we verify Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions in accordance with ISO 14064 guidelines and internationally recognized frameworks such as the GHG Protocol, including alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) requirements. In addition to compliance, verification also helps identify areas for improvement in emission calculations and data collection processes.

Our approach

Carbon footprint verification begins with collecting and assessing data on emission sources within the organization, such as energy consumption, transport, and waste streams. These emissions are categorized into three scopes that together form the total carbon footprint.

  • Scope 1: direct emissions from own sources such as fuel consumption in vehicles and installations
  • Scope 2: indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat or steam
  • Scope 3: other indirect emissions arising across the upstream and downstream value chain, including purchased goods and services, transportation, employee commuting, and business travel.

In addition, account is taken of various greenhouse gases such as methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases, which can have a higher climate impact than CO₂.

Insight into emissions and improvements

Carbon footprint verification ensures reliable emission data and helps organizations improve their sustainability strategy.

What does this mean for you?

  • You demonstrate that emission data are reliable and correct.
  • You comply with ESG and reporting obligations such as CSRD
  • You gain insight into emission sources and areas for improvement.
  • You support net-zero and climate goals
  • You increase the trust of stakeholders and auditors

Carbon footprint verification can also be combined with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), in which the entire life cycle of products is analyzed to identify emission hotspots and implement sustainable improvements.

Independent verification and sector experience

As an independent verification body, we conduct verifications without consultancy activities, thereby preventing conflicts of interest. This ensures independent and reliable verification results.

Our technical teams have extensive experience in the transport sector, among others, and understand operational processes, emission sources, and reporting challenges. This enables us to perform practical and reliable verifications that align with real-world practice.

Sustainability in the future

Carbon footprint reporting, ESG reporting, and climate targets are becoming increasingly important for organizations. By having emissions verified, you ensure reliable reporting, better decision-making, and preparation for future regulations and sustainability obligations.

Frequently asked questions about Carbon Footprint verification

This is an independent verification of an organization's greenhouse gas emissions according to international standards and guidelines.

Scope 1 are direct emissions, Scope 2 indirect emissions from energy use and Scope 3 emissions in the supply chain such as transportation and purchased goods.

For example, ISO 14064, the GHG Protocol and Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

For ESG reporting, CSRD, net-zero strategies and reliable sustainability reporting.

After verification, you will receive a verification statement or assurance statement that the emissions report is reliable.

Independent third-party verification provides an objective assessment of your emissions calculations. This increases the reliability of your reporting and the confidence of customers, investors and regulators.

The distinction between Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions shows the extent to which your organization affects emissions. Many reports focus only on Scope 1 and 2, but by including all scopes you get a complete picture of the total carbon footprint of your organization.

CO₂ is the most common greenhouse gas, but there are other greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide that have a greater impact on the climate. CO₂e (CO₂ equivalent) converts all greenhouse gases to one unit based on their Global Warming Potential so that emissions can be properly compared.

Verifications are performed by experienced and qualified auditors with extensive experience in emissions verification. They work according to international standards and verification standards to ensure the quality and reliability of the verification.

A complaint and appeal process is available if you disagree with the verification statement or process. This allows an assessment to be reviewed according to established procedures.

The verification statement can be included in sustainability reports or ESG reports to demonstrate to customers and stakeholders that the verified emissions data meet your organization's environmental policy objectives. The statement should only be used for those items that have actually been verified.
