Destructive testing for safe PE piping systems
When constructing a PE piping system, the quality of the welds is critical to safety and reliability. An insufficient weld can lead to leakage or premature failure.
The quality of PE electrofusion welds is ensured through a combination of checks and examinations:
- Control of preparations and welding parameters before commencement
- Control during and after the welding process on site
- Visual and mechanical examination of (test) welds in an independent laboratory
- Ultrasonic PAUT examination of field welds on site.
Destructive testing here is an important link in the total quality assurance from the material being applied.
Objective assessment
In our own laboratory we prepare and test PE electrode welds according to applicable standards. We test both field welds (on a sample basis) and test welds. During destructive testing, the electrofusion weld is actually tested for strength.
With a detachment test we assess:
- The quality of the fusion
- The fracture behavior of the welded joint
- Whether there is a sticky weld or brittle fracture
So you get an objective assessment of the mechanical performance of the joint.
Testing in accordance with recognized standards and guidelines
We carry out destructive testing in accordance with:
- NTA 8828 - Electrofusion welding of PE pipes and PE fittings.
- VM 102 - Welding practice instructions PE electrofusion welding
- NEN-EN 1555-3 - Plastic piping systems for gas supply - Polyethylene (PE) - Part 3: Fittings
- ISO 13954 - Bonding test PE electrofusion welding ≥ 90 mm
- ISO 13955 - PE electrofusion resistance test < 90 mm
- ISO 13956 - PE electrofusion saddle tack test.
With this, our tests are in line with current laws, regulations and industry guidelines.
