Stability of geosynthetics in civil applications.

Geosynthetics are commonly used in civil engineering and environmental engineering. These include fabrics, webs, geomembranes, foils and grids with a sealing or enclosing function. In sealing structures with geosynthetics on embankments, it is important to demonstrate stability.

A shear test provides insight into the frictional properties of the materials and helps determine whether the desired slope angle is achievable. Normec carries out these tests independently according to NEN-EN 12957-1 or NEN-EN 12957-2.

Our approach to shear testing

A shear test can already be performed in the design phase. This provides early insight into the stability of the structure and enables you to substantiate that the design meets the specified requirements.

The test has a short lead time and allows contractors in the GWW sector to give their client certainty. You thereby demonstrate independently that the right geosynthetics are applied under the right conditions.

Expertise of Normec QS

Normec performs shear tests at its laboratory in Bennekom, which is equipped with modern measuring equipment. The test can be attended and samples can be supplied by you or taken by our inspectors.

If desired, an inspector will take care of the sampling, so that the representativeness of the materials used can be demonstrated. Afterwards you will receive a clear report in Dutch.

This means for you:

  • Insight into the friction properties of geosynthetics.
  • Substantiation of the stability of embankments and sealing structures
  • Independent verification according to applicable standards
  • Possibility of early detection of errors
  • Better substantiation towards clients

Verification during the construction phase

A shear test can also be valuable during the execution of a project. In our laboratory it can be checked whether the friction properties of the geosynthetics used match the requirements from the design.

Because conditions can change, performance of geosynthetics is not always constant. A shear test gives both client and contractor independent insight. Any adjustments can then still be made during the execution of the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

A shear test measures the friction between layers of geosynthetics or between geosynthetics and other materials. This is used to assess the stability of a structure.

The test is performed according to NEN-EN 12957-1 or NEN-EN 12957-2.

It can be done either in the design phase or during the construction phase of a project.

You can, but an inspector from Normec QS can also take care of the sampling.

Yes, it is possible to attend the shear test in the laboratory.

The test is performed at Normec Qs laboratory in Ede.
