OIT measurements: for plastic products and PE materials
In Normec's laboratory, we carry out completely independent measurements on samples of plastic products and plastic compounds.
Our laboratory facilities include a DSC device (Differential Scanning Calorimetry). With this, various material properties can be determined, such as:
- OIT (oxidation induction time)
- Transition temperatures
- Melting phenomena
- Crystallization phenomena
An OIT measurement can be carried out as part of a regular quality control or within a (residual) lifetime investigation of PE products. The measurements are carried out entirely in-house and under accreditation according to NEN-EN-ISO 11357-6.
Oxidation induction time of a material
In an OIT measurement, the oxidation induction time of a material is determined. This is done by exposing a specimen to an oxygen environment at a constant temperature.
Using DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry), the heat generation during oxidation is measured. Oxidation of PE material begins when the thermal stabilizer in the material is consumed.
The time between switching from a nitrogen environment to an oxygen environment and starting the oxidation reaction at a constant temperature is called the OIT value. This value is calculated from the DSC measurement curve.

OIT measurements on PE products
OIT measurements are mainly performed in the laboratory on PE products such as pipes and geomembranes. The test determines the (remaining) resistance of the material to oxidation.
In combination with exposure in water and air at elevated temperature, the measurement can be used within residual life studies. For example, it can be used to investigate whether materials are suitable for an intended service life of one hundred years.
The OIT measurement thus provides a result on the remaining stabilization of the material.
