Inspection of combination seals for landfills.

A combination seal consists of a film in direct contact with a mineral sealing layer. This double construction combines the advantages of both materials and increases security against leakage.

Combination seals are mainly used in landfills, where protection of soil and groundwater and prevention of unwanted methane emission is crucial. The quality of construction largely determines long-term performance. If fully independent monitoring is properly carried out during construction, the quality and expected residual life can be demonstrated. This is why we assess combination seals during the various construction phases.

This ensures that the construction meets the specified requirements and functions sustainably.

How does the inspection proceed?

We perform the inspection according to the applicable protocols and carefully assess the construction of the top seal. A landfill combination seal usually consists of:

  • The waste body
  • The support layer
  • The mineral layer
  • The foil layer (usually PE-HD)
  • The drainage layer (sand or drainage mat)
  • The covering soil

During construction, we check that the layers are correctly applied and meet the technical requirements.

Laboratory examination of the mineral layer

In addition to the visual and technical assessment, the mineral layer is tested by an accredited laboratory on our behalf. This includes determination of the compaction value and the water permeability (k-value).

These parameters provide insight into the sealing effect of the construction. In this way it is objectively determined whether the combination sealing meets the specified performance requirements.

All findings are recorded in a report for you as client. If desired, this report will be provided with a declaration of conformity.

With an independent inspection:

  • You reduce the risk of leaks and environmental damage
  • Demonstrate compliance with permit and environmental requirements
  • Limit future repair or remediation costs
  • Receive a clear report with findings
  • Get a declaration of conformity if required

Sustainable and safe sealing constructions

With a carefully inspected combination seal you take responsibility for safe and future-proof landfill management. You prevent risks to soil and groundwater and demonstrate that your facility meets the highest quality standards.

We guide you during all construction phases with an independent and expert approach, so you can continue to build with confidence.

Frequently asked questions about inspection of combination seals

Inspection takes place during various stages of construction, depending on permit requirements, project agreements and minimum demonstrable residual life.

The mineral layer limits water permeability and contributes to the sealing function of the structure.

Laboratory testing provides objective measurement data on seal quality, such as compaction value and k-value. In addition, PE welded joints are tested for quality and durability. In combination with residual life testing provides insight into the performance and service life of the system.

You will receive a report of findings and, if applicable, a compliance statement.
