DIS published, voting and comment period starts
The revision of ISO 9001 is in full swing. The Draft International Standard (DIS) was recently published and is now 12 weeks out for review and comment by affected stakeholders. This update, which is expected to be finally published in the second half of 2026, is of great interest to organizations looking to align their quality management systems with the latest business developments and requirements.
Key changes in the draft version The draft version of ISO 9001 introduces targeted updates that align the standard more closely with the harmonized structure of other ISO standards. The updates include:
In chapters 4.1 and 4.2: The previously implemented changes related to climate change (2024) are now fully integrated into chapters 4.1 and 4.2.
In Chapter 5.1: This encourages organizations to promote a strong culture of quality and ethical behavior, with concrete guidance on how this can be demonstrated.
In Chapter 6.1: A clear separation has been made between risk and opportunity management, with new subchapters (6.1.1 to 6.1.3) and comprehensive guidelines that help organizations take a structured approach to risks and opportunities.
In addition, some adjustments have been made to the requirements of chapters 4 to 10, and comments have been added or modified to clarify the application and interpretation of the standard. Appendix A has been significantly expanded to include practical guidance directly related to the chapter of the standard.
Transition period and implementation
The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) will announce the transition period and associated requirements closer to the final publication date. In general, ISO management system standards allow a transition period of up to three years. However, due to the relatively limited scope of the changes, a shorter transition period may be proposed.
