Handbook 4.0 is more in line with international guidelines, such as the Paris Climate Agreement and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Higher steps also require a climate transition plan, by which organizations chart a route to net zero emissions by 2050.
You can view the requirements of version 4.0 via My CO₂-Performanceladder. Certificate holders at level 3 can advance to step 1 of Handbook 4.0 with comparable effort. For level 4 or 5 certificates, the transition to Handbook 4.0 means a heavier task. The extent of the adjustments depends, among other things, on the sector and the size of the organization. Are you ready for certification? Our team is ready for you.
Transitional arrangement
The transition to Handbook 4.0 will be phased in:
- Until January 14, 2027, audits can take place based on both Handbook 3.1 and Handbook 4.0.
- From January 14, 2027, only certification based on Handbook 4.0 will be possible.
- Certificates based on Manual 3.1 will remain valid until the next audit after January 14, 2027.
- Contracting authorities are advised not to use Handbook 4.0 in tenders until 2026, with full transition no later than Jan. 14, 2027.
