For occupational health and safety

New standard DIN EN ISO 45001:2023: What you need to know

In December 2023, the new standard DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 was published, replacing DIN ISO 45001:2018. This standard now forms the basis for the certification of management systems for occupational health and safety.

Successful accreditation of the VQZ

The Normec VQZ certification body applied for accreditation according to DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 at an early stage and created the internal requirements for the transition. As a result, the certification body received its new accreditation certificates for DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 in April 2024.

What changes.

The new standard DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 is now officially recognized as a European Standard (EN). This update includes a number of important editorial changes:

  • Adoption as a European standard: ISO 45001:2018 has been adopted unchanged.
  • Updated index: This improves navigation and understanding of the standard.
  • Adjusted terminology: "Persons" has been replaced with "visitors" and "customer" with "employee" for greater consistency and clarity.
  • Multiple audit programs: Section 5.4(d)(8) now refers to "audit programs."
  • Consistent terminology for risk assessment: In Section 6.1, "evaluation" has been replaced with "assessment."
  • More specific terminology for hazards: Section 8.1.2 now uses "hazards" instead of "hazards."

What does this mean for you?

The requirements for current client management systems do not change. The changes are mainly editorial in nature and do not directly affect existing certifications. Certifications based on DIN ISO 45001:2018 will remain valid until December 31, 2026. The transition to the new standard must be completed by this date to keep the certificates valid.

What to do.

  • Acquisition of the new standard: Obtain DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 to understand the changes.
  • Assessment and adaptation: Evaluate the current management system and make necessary adaptations in accordance with the new standard, including updating the documented information in accordance with section 7.5.3.
  • Audit and Certification: Ensure the system is ready for transition during scheduled audits. All adjustments must be completed before the transition audit. If the transition occurs during a surveillance audit, you can obtain a new certificate upon request. For more information on costs, refer to the full client information.
