ISO 42001: What Does This Mean for You?

ISO/IEC 42001 is the international standard for an AI management system (AIMS). It is the first certifiable standard that allows organizations to demonstrate that they develop, deliver, or use AI responsibly.

What the standard actually is

An AIMS is a management system: a coherent set of policies, roles, risk and impact analysis, monitoring, and continuous improvement related to your AI applications. Its structure is very similar to that of ISO 9001 or ISO 27001, but it is specifically focused on the risks and responsibilities associated with AI.

What the standard is not

ISO 42001 is not a certification mark that states a specific AI model is “safe” or “bias-free.” It demonstrates that you manage your AI systematically and verifiably.
Nor is it a harmonized standard under the EU AI Regulation. An ISO 42001 certificate therefore does not automatically confer a presumption of conformity with that regulation.

Your Role(s) in the AI Chain

The standard requires that you first clarify which role(s) you fulfill in relation to the AI systems in your organization. These roles determine which requirements and controls are relevant. In practice, the following roles are most common (often in combination):

  • AI provider – you supply AI systems or services to others (for example, as a software vendor or SaaS provider).
  • AI producer / developer – you design, train, test, or customize AI systems (including in-house development or fine-tuning).
  • AI partner – you provide components, data, integration, or support within the AI chain, without having full control over the end product.
  • User / customer – you purchase or use AI from third parties and must maintain control over risks, data, and human oversight.

Many organizations fulfill multiple roles simultaneously. A clear definition of roles is the foundation for a realistic scope of your AIMS and for a smooth certification process.

What You Need to Put in Place

To obtain certification, you must establish a functioning AI management system. Key components include:

  • an overview of the AI you use or provide, including the role(s) you fulfill in that context;
  • an AI policy and clearly assigned responsibilities;
  • risk analysis and impact assessment (effects on people, groups, and the organization);
  • agreements regarding data, human oversight, and suppliers;
  • monitoring, internal auditing, and continuous improvement.

The standard is scalable. Even smaller organizations can comply using a compact and proportionate system, provided that the chosen measures align with the actual risks and roles.

Why is this relevant?

An AIMS gives you greater control over AI risks such as errors, bias, privacy issues, and reputational damage. It supports your compliance with the EU AI Regulation: while it is not a complete replacement, it does provide a solid, auditable foundation. Furthermore, you demonstrate verifiable reliability to customers, partners, and regulators.

Certification

Certification is voluntary. After you’ve implemented the AIMS and had it in operation for a period of time, an independent audit is conducted in two stages (Stage 1 and Stage 2). If the outcome is positive, you’ll receive a certificate valid for three years, with annual surveillance audits.

In a nutshell

ISO 42001 helps you not only use AI but also manage it in a demonstrably responsible manner—tailored to the roles you play in the AI supply chain. We’d be happy to guide you through the implementation or certification process, tailored to the size and risks of your organization.

ISO 27001 certification is not the same as NIS2 compliance

Moniek Steegers has been working at Normec Certification Institute (NCI) for over two years as an ISO auditor for ISO 27001 and ISO 9001. Prior to that, she worked at KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers as an IT auditor and consultant, as well as a compliance and information risk officer at NXP and Canon. Given her background, she understands well why ISO 27001 certification is an appropriate way for organizations to have their information security management systems independently assessed. However, it is not necessarily sufficient to also comply with the European NIS 2 Directive, for which Dutch legislation will soon apply as well, as she explains in this interview.
