ISO 9001:2026: What Will Change for Organizations?

The new ISO 9001 has been published. The standard for quality management systems has been updated, with a greater emphasis on leadership, quality culture, and managing risks and opportunities. What does this mean for your organization? Do you need to redesign your existing system, or simply refine it? Normec Certification outlines the key developments and practical considerations.

What Does the Publication Mean for Certified Organizations?

ISO 9001:2026 was published on September 16, 2026. For organizations with an ISO 9001:2015 certificate, now is the time to examine the differences from their existing quality management system.

The publication of the standard and the planning of the transition are separate matters. For your certification, the applicable transition arrangements are decisive. The certification body will determine when the transition can take place.

Building on the Existing Quality Management System

ISO 9001:2026 builds on the familiar foundation of ISO 9001:2015. Customer focus, process control, and continuous improvement remain central. The new edition clarifies requirements and aligns more closely with other ISO management standards.

Your existing quality management system therefore serves as the starting point. The extent of any necessary adjustments depends on how your organization is already implementing the new requirements in practice. You should therefore review both the documented policies and day-to-day operations.

Aligning Quality with the Organization’s Strategic Direction

The revised standard strengthens the link between quality management and the organization’s strategic direction. Quality objectives must be meaningful in relation to what your organization aims to achieve and what customers expect from you.

For example, do you want to grow in a market where delivery reliability is crucial? Then it makes sense to focus on planning, supplier performance, and meeting delivery commitments.

Greater Emphasis on Leadership and Quality Culture

The new edition places greater emphasis on leadership, quality culture, and ethical behavior. This requires visible commitment from executive management and supervisors.

In practice, this might include creating space to discuss mistakes, clarifying responsibilities, and acting with care when pressure mounts. For example, what happens if a shipment must leave on time, but a quality check has not yet been completed? It is precisely in such decisions that it becomes clear how quality is upheld within the organization.

Distinguishing Risks and Opportunities More Clearly

Dealing with risks and opportunities is given a more prominent role in the new edition. Both require attention: which developments could hinder the achievement of results, and which opportunities could actually contribute to improvement?

Therefore, assess whether your organization is giving sufficient attention to both aspects and how you evaluate whether chosen actions are yielding the desired results.

What can you do right now?

An initial comparison between the new standard and your current practices will highlight where action is needed. Involve management, the quality manager, and the employees who carry out the processes on a daily basis.

A time to assess how your system is working

The transition provides a good opportunity to examine whether your quality management system still aligns with the organization. Are its objectives practical? Are responsibilities clearly defined? And do improvement actions lead to demonstrably better results?

By focusing on these issues now, you’ll streamline your preparations and link the transition to improvements that add value for your organization and your customers.
