REDcert Certification: Compliance with European Sustainability Regulations

Do you want to sell or trade biomass on the European market? Then you must prove that it was produced sustainably. The REDcert-EU certification system offers an approach that makes this sustainability transparent and verifiable.

In Germany, the requirements for the sustainable production of biomass and energy sources are primarily regulated by two ordinances:

  • BioSt-NachV —for electricity and heat
  • BioKraft-NachV – for the production of biofuels, particularly gas

REDcert has established itself particularly in the field of gases used as fuel. The system is recognized within the EU and is also accepted in some non-EU countries. Normec guides you independently and impartially through the entire certification process.

Who is REDcert certification relevant for?

REDcert certification is an option for the following market participants, among others:

  • Primary collectors and collection points
  • Storage and transshipment facilities
  • Biofuel processors and producers

REDcert can also provide companies outside the EU with access to the European market.

Certification Requirement in the Fuel Market

REDcert enables market participants throughout the entire supply chain to provide verifiable proof of compliance with legal sustainability requirements.

What are the key areas of verification?

  1. Traceability and mass balance

The origin of the biomass used must be documented in a traceable manner across all stages of the supply chain. This includes a clearly maintained mass balance as well as the correct allocation of the raw materials used to specific locations and processes.

  1. Greenhouse Gas Emissions

A greenhouse gas calculation is generally required to demonstrate CO2 reductions.

  1. Permitted Raw Materials

REDcert applies to, among other things:

  • agricultural raw materials (e.g., corn, grains, oilseeds, sugar beets)
  • biogenic waste and residues (e.g., manure, straw, wood residues, used cooking oil, biowaste)
