Better Biomass certification according to NTA 8080 and RED regulations.

Better Biomass is the Dutch certification scheme based on the NTA 8080 standard and since 2009 recognized by the European Commission as a voluntary scheme under RED II and RED III.

With a Better Biomass certificate you show that your organization meets international requirements for sustainability, renewable energy and chain transparency. This allows you to respond to the growing demand for reliable and responsibly deployable biomass within the energy transition and circular economy.

For Dutch organizations that use solid biomass for energy applications, Better Biomass can also be used to meet the sustainability requirements from the Regeling conformiteitsbeoordeling vaste biomassa voor energietoepassingen.

Practical guidance on certification and chain transparency

Sustainable biomass requires control and transparency throughout the chain. This is why the requirements are laid down within the NTA 8080 series:

  • NTA 8080-1:2024+A1:2025 - Terminology, overview and general requirements.
  • NTA 8080-2:2024+A1:2025 - Sustainability requirements.
  • NTA 8080-3:2024+A1:2025 - Greenhouse gas calculations
  • NTA 8080-4:2024+A1:2025 - Chain of Custody

In addition, Better Biomass aligns with the revised RED II Directive including IR2022/996 and current RED regulations.

Normec supports you during the entire certification process. We assess processes, administration, chain transparency and sustainability criteria so that you quickly gain insight into areas for improvement and demonstrably meet the requirements.

Certainty about sustainability, traceability and compliance

During the audit, we assess whether biomass is used sustainably, responsibly and in full traceability. Among other things, we look at:

  • Origin and traceability of biomass.
  • Chain of custody and mass balance
  • Greenhouse gas (GHG) calculations
  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
  • Effects on biodiversity and environment
  • Social and economic aspects within the chain
  • Compliance with sustainability criteria and regulations

Depending on the type of biomass and application, additional requirements may be relevant. Think of woody biomass, organic residues, biobased feedstock or circular materials.

With Better Biomass certification:

  • Show that your biomass is sustainably produced or used.
  • Comply with RED II, RED III and relevant sustainability criteria.
  • Substantiate your greenhouse gas reduction and GHG performance
  • Increase your chances in tenders, subsidies and international markets
  • Strengthen your trust with customers, financiers and regulators

Frequently asked questions about Better Biomass certification

Better Biomass is a certification scheme based on the NTA 8080 standard. It demonstrates that biomass is sustainably produced, processed and applied according to international sustainability criteria.

The certification is relevant to organizations that produce, process, trade or deploy biomass within renewable energy, bioenergy or circular applications.

Woody biomass, organic residues, biobased feedstocks and other sustainable biomaterials, among others, can be assessed within the scheme.

During audits we assess traceability, mass balance, Chain of Custody, greenhouse gas calculations and compliance with sustainability criteria, among other things.

Yes. With certification you demonstrate compliance with relevant sustainability criteria and regulations, which offers advantages in subsidies, tenders and international collaborations.

A Better Biomass certificate is valid for five years. During this period an annual surveillance audit takes place.
