What is an ISCC certificate and why is it important?

With an International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) you prove that your organization works responsibly. This internationally recognized certification scheme, developed in Germany, focuses on renewable energy, materials and biobased products.
An ISCC certificate shows that you have a grip on your supply chain, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet social and environmental criteria. For many buyers and stakeholders, this is a prerequisite for doing business.
ISCC certification: this is what the process looks like
ISCC certification starts with an audit. During this audit, we assess whether your organization meets the set requirements.
Among other things, we look at:
- Traceability and origin of biomass
- Mass balance and CO₂ reduction
- Compliance with environmental requirements
- Social criteria and fair working conditions
Do you not yet fully meet the requirements? Then you will receive specific points for improvement. In this way you work step by step towards successful certification. An ISCC certificate is valid for one year. An annual re-audit takes place to extend certification.
ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS
Several certificates exist within ISCC. The choice depends on your activities and market.
- ISCC EU
ISCC EU is intended for companies working with biofuels and energy within the European Union. This variant is recognized by the European Commission under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). With this you demonstrate that you meet European requirements for sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction. - ISCC PLUS
ISCC PLUS has a broader scope and can be used worldwide. In addition to biofuels, this certification also applies to biobased products, renewable energy, food and feed.
