Milieukeur Green Electricity
The certification scheme Milieukeur Green Electricity enables suppliers to demonstrate the sustainable origin of their product. With the logo 'Milieukeur Green Electricity' you communicate this transparently to a wide audience.
Green electricity is generated from renewable sources such as sun, wind, water and biomass. Nevertheless, the actual sustainability of this electricity is regularly debated. Guarantees of Origin (GOs) do not always offer complete certainty about the actual origin and sustainability.
The Eco-label Green Electricity was developed to offer that extra certainty. Normec performs the associated audits.
Guarantees of Origin
Specific sustainability requirements and environmental criteria apply to the award of the Ecolabel. These differ for each renewable source. For all sources, the legal requirement regarding the write-off of Guarantees of Origin, as prescribed in the Electricity Act, must be met.
In addition, additional criteria apply:
- For green electricity: requirements for the environmental quality of the energy sources used
- For biomass: requirements for the sustainability of the fuel and CO₂ performance based on life cycle analysis
- For hydropower: requirements on the date of issue of the environmental permit
- For foreign renewable energy: same environmental criteria as for domestic sources
- For green electricity imports: additional criteria around MoU and additionality
During the audit, a Normec auditor checks whether the quantities of electricity sold have actually been demonstrably purchased and/or produced from renewable sources. In doing so, we check both:
- The volume component (kWh)
- The quality component (product composition per renewable source).
