Renovation of a Percolate Basin at Attero

Normec ABV Haukes played a key role in the inspection and renovation of a leachate basin at an Attero site. The basin, constructed of asphalt, exhibited various visible signs of damage at the waterline. To ensure that Attero met the requirements for liquid tightness, Attero decided to have ABV Haukes conduct an inspection.

From Inspection to Sustainable Renovation

To avoid a traditional visual inspection—which would require the basin to be completely pumped dry and cleaned—an innovative inspection method was chosen. The condition of the structure was assessed using a geoelectric survey. The results made it clear that work needed to be carried out to continue ensuring the basin’s liquid-tightness.

Based on these findings, the client decided to completely renovate the basin. The chosen solution involved applying a bituminous membrane (SAMI layer) to the existing asphalt structure, combined with a new asphalt surface course to ensure long-term liquid tightness.

Technical Challenge

The renovation presented several technical challenges. The basin featured a sloped embankment, which placed high demands on both safe execution and accessibility within the basin.

Prior to the work, ABV Haukes inspected the existing asphalt structure to determine whether the subbase was suitable for the application of the SAMI layer.

After the SAMI layer was applied, the new asphalt surface course was laid in phases. During each phase of construction, ABV Haukes conducted inspections and quality controls to ensure that the structure met all technical and liquid-tight requirements.

Repair of the Embankment

To facilitate the work, a temporary access route was created in the embankment to allow equipment to reach the site. Upon completion of the renovation, this section was fully restored. This involved reapplying a watertight seal, a SAMI layer, and a new asphalt structure, ensuring that this section also meets the specified requirements.

Result

Thanks to the close collaboration between the operational teams and project management at Attero,Gebr. Jansen,Latexfalt, various contractors, and Normec ABV Haukes, this complex project was successfully completed within three weeks.

The result is a fully renovated leachate basin that meets the applicable requirements for liquid-tight facilities. Upon completion of the work, the Liquid-Tight Facility Certificate could be issued.

This project demonstrates how innovative inspection techniques, specialized asphalt expertise, and strong collaboration among all parties involved lead to a sustainable and reliable end result.
