Aviation Carbon 2024, a huge success!

Aviation Carbon 2024, co-organized by Normec Verifavia, successfully concluded on November 26, 2024, further cementing its status as the longest-running “must-attend” event for sustainability in aviation. Thank you to all participants for making this possible! The conference brought together various stakeholders, including airlines, fuel suppliers, carbon market experts, policymakers, and environmental organizations, to discuss the latest developments in sustainability, compliance, and implications for the industry.

Highlights of Aviation Carbon 2024:

  • A comprehensive agenda: The conference featured in-depth sessions on key topics such as carbon removal, the new non-CO₂ MRV regulations and their implications, ReFuelEU Aviation, and SAF claiming under GHG frameworks. These discussions provided attendees with valuable insights into current regulations and emerging trends in aviation sustainability.
  • Diverse participation: Building on the success of previous years, Aviation Carbon 2024 brought together more than 400 delegates representing airlines, business operators, and sustainability experts from around the world. This broad participation facilitated rich discussions and networking opportunities and fostered collaboration within the industry.
  • A Focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF): A significant portion of the conference was dedicated to exploring the use, development, and challenges of SAF. Sessions examined fuel technologies, SAF markets and registries, SAF claims issues and guidelines, and the role of carbon markets in supporting the aviation industry’s decarbonization efforts.
  • Delving into Regulatory Compliance: In collaboration with Normec Verifavia, the event featured detailed sessions on regulatory compliance, providing aircraft operators with essential updates and guidance on EU ETS SAF claims, ReFuelEU Aviation obligations, and SAF reporting requirements. The presence of a competent authority, a fuel supplier, and an aircraft operator on the panel helped everyone understand and appreciate the perspectives and challenges of the various stakeholders. These sessions provided participants with insights and gave them the opportunity to ask questions.

Standardization Critical to Unlocking Credible SAF Certificate Market

Standardization critical to unlocking credible SAF certificate market Aviation’s path to decarbonization depends heavily on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). While SAF is the most viable near-term solution to reduce flight emissions, limited availability, higher costs, and increasing market complexity slow its large-scale adoption. A new white paper, “Comparative analysis of Scope 3 SAF certificates,” led by 123Carbon and co-signed by Smart Freight Centre and Normec Verifavia, examines how SAF certificates are currently structured and used across the aviation value chain.

Navigating SAF documentation: Common challenges and best practices

As Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) adoption continues to grow under Aviation Regulations, documentation quality and traceability have become key areas of focus during reporting of SAF and verification activities. While SAF offers significant environmental benefits, demonstrating compliance requires operators to maintain accurate, complete, and verifiable records throughout the reporting period. Based on our experience supporting aviation stakeholders with compliance and verification activities, several recurring challenges have emerged. Fortunately, many of these issues can be addressed through early planning and proactive engagement with fuel suppliers and competent authorities.

Navigating ICAO’s CORSIA in the First Phase

As CORSIA enters its first phase (2024–2026), significant changes to the compliance requirements have been introduced starting in 2024, marking a shift in regulatory standards and expectations; the most notable being the shift in the baseline to 85% of 2019 CO₂ emissions subject to offsetting requirements. With a likely positive sectoral growth factor (SGF), aircraft operators will need to cancel emission units for the coming years and submit an emission unit cancellation report (EUCR) for the first phase (2024–2026). To meet these requirements, operators can also use fuels eligible under CORSIA and benefit from the resulting reductions.

CORSIA 2024: Important Updates and Compliance Guidelines for Operators of EEA and Non-EEA Aircraft

The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is the first global market-based initiative aimed at achieving carbon-neutral growth in aviation starting in 2020. The framework for CORSIA is set out in Annex 16, Volume IV of the Convention on International Civil Aviation, and is designed to offset CO2 emissions above 2019 levels. It includes requirements for the monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of emissions and the implementation of offset mechanisms. With the publication of the second edition of SARP Annex 16, Volume IV—which takes effect on July 31, 2023, and applies starting January 1, 2024—significant updates have been implemented. These changes apply to both operators from the European Economic Area (EEA) and operators from outside the EEA. This newsletter provides an overview of the most important updates to the SARPs and relevant EU directives.
